My dad (his stepdad) was so cruel to him and I feel this was the reason he felt he could not tell any of us and he became a recluse and hardly went out of the house. Eventually he came to realise he was what he was and had no control over his preferences. He is now in a happy relationship but the relationship with my dad is beyond repair.

if he hangs out with girls rather than boys? more often just reflects a good relationship with their Mum. playing with dolls? totally normal, just a lot of little boys parents wont let them. All my gay friends are different, some fit the stereotype and some you'd never guess in a million years. 10 seems like a very young age to know. I wasn't bothered about boys (in a relationship way, i'm a girl btw) till I was at least 14. From the responses of people on here being gay seems to have lost the stigma it used to have, so don't worry. The 'coming out' bit seems to be the only time that you have to worry and so long as you are open about gay being OK then it should be easier for him if he is, which is still a big 'if'. I dont mean saying 'it's ok if you're gay id dont mind' more like if someone gay is on TV say like, 'isnt he with that bloke form such and such, they make such a lovely couple. In my not-so-long-ago teens i found it easier to talk to my parents in terms of programs we were watching, like visual hypotheticals. If they dissapproved of the behaviour eg drunkeness they saw, teens sharing bedrooms I knew not to do stuff like that (well not in front of them). Sorry, long v long post!! x

What age can you tell or is it different for each person.
