hey guys,

as many of you know, its my baby girls 1st birthday on saturday,

i know how i want to do it.. i think... sponge cake with green icing as the 'garden' and then the chrarcter on the top.... BUT...

whats the best icing to use? and the easiest! and which icing shall i use to make the iggle piggle character for the top??

HELP PLEASE LOL

thanks x

Wish i could help Marie, I've never tried cake decorating to that extent
Good luck!

There's an easier way than all that Marie, Ice it with normal white roll out icing then use a new clean paintbrush and paint it all with green food colouring, the brush strokes might even make it look more grassy!lol

You can then use the bits left to make the character on top

i was thinking that, however when i've tried to ice like that b4 it never goes on right!

do u think the left over bits would mould right to make the character??

i might butter ice the cake? oh i dunno!

i'll send u a pic nicky lol it will prob all go so wrong!

colour some desicated coconut green makes great grass

with the painting bit, if you have trouble with doing it, mix the colour down with some water first as it makes it go on much easier

if you kneed the bits that you cut off well they will become easier to mould, kind like play-doh

If you do butter icing, be careful with adding green colour as it's yellow already and you might get a weird colour....maybe try to find the elusive blue colourant!lol

kazza thats a great idea and it'd get round the problem of butter icing's funny colour!lol

adding a little green colouring to melted white chocolate works a treat aswell
Posted by kazza21 on Wednesday, 23rd July 2008, 2:20pm
that sounds good too

sometimes the coconut can make little ones cough abit they dont seem to like the texture and it gets everywhere so the white chocolate is probably better hope it turns out ok

The trick with cake decorating is confidence. I have a book that i got from ebay and it is step by step pictures on what to do. if you want me to email a few pages over let me know next time you are cake decorating.

for future ref, if you are useing ready to roll iceing put the colour stright onto the iceing then keep needing it till the colour is all mixed in, when you have put the iceing on the cake to iron out any lumps and bumps use a slightly damp sponge to rub the bumps out very gently, if you are looking for a marbled effect you can ice the cake first then use a sponge to put the coulour on.

hope this is of use
